Announcement - PRACE announces third Tier-0 machine

Last week the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, PRACE, welcomed the upcoming availability of the third Tier-0 system for the PRACE Research Infrastructure. The contract about the next supercomputer at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, Germany (Leibniz-Rechenzentrum, LRZ) - as part of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS)- “SuperMUC” was signed on December 13th in the presence of the Minister of the State of Bavaria, Wolfgang Heubisch, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Humanities in Germany, Arndt Bode and Martin Jetter, Chairman of the Board for IBM Germany.

This is the third world-class Tier-0 supercomputer announced by PRACE. SuperMUC will start operation in mid 2012 and be one of the fastest general purpose supercomputers in the world with 3 Petaflop/s peak performance, 320 TeraBytes of main memory and 12 PetaBytes of permanent storage. SuperMUC has a new cooling concept and will be very energy efficient.

“With SuperMUC as the third Tier-0 system, the PRACE Infrastructure sets another milestone in providing the European science community with world-class supercomputing resources. With this system, PRACE will increase its overall Tier-0 capability by more than 5 times since the creation if the infrastructure in 2010”, said Thomas Eickermann, PRACE project manager (Forschungzentrum Jülich, Germany).

Although SuperMUC will be comprised of more than 110,000 processor cores, stable operation and excellent scaling are expected due to its architecture. Scientists will be able to use their established programming models without changes on this new supercomputer. Using the PRACE Research Infrastructure, SuperMUC offers new possibilities for scientists from 20 European PRACE member states.

Active components like processors and memory are directly cooled with water that can have a temperature of up to 45 degrees Celsius. This “High Temperature Liquid Cooling” combined with innovative system software enable an only very moderate increase in energy needed to operate this system. In addition, all LRZ buildings will be heated re-using this energy.

PRACE Research Infrastructure’s supercomputers are used for research in all fields of science like simulation of the evolution of the universe under the influence of dark matter, modeling the earth's interior, propagation of earthquakes, computing the dynamical properties of miscellaneous systems from engineering and nature, down to biological systems and medical scenarios.

The investment costs for SuperMUC - including operational costs and power for 5 to 6 years - are 83 million Euros; they are funded jointly by the State of Bavaria and Germany - as are the additional 50 million Euros for the extension of LRZ's buildings. In addition, Bavaria will support accompanying projects in the science of high performance computing.
