The 1970s in the 21st century: synthesized music returns (via parallel processing)


What do analog synthesizers from the ’70s have in common with grid computing?

Both can be massively parallel, with many of the same challenges.

Curtis Roads, a researcher in media arts and technology with a focus on music, wrote programs that spawned thousands of parallel processes for computerized musical composition.

The editor of the Computer Music Journal (published by MIT Press), and co-founder of the International Computer Music Association, Roads is often a featured speaker at conferences such as Supercomputing.
