Issue 197: iSGTW 20th October 2010

Profile – Domenico Vicinanza, master of fusion

What do science and music have in common?

Domenico Vicinanza fuses these disciplines together by using his talents as a musician and engineer, reviving ancient Greek musical instruments virtually.

He plays his music through his laptop — programmed with unique sounds gleaned from reconstructions of lost instruments thousands of years old — while performing live with musicians who use more traditional drums, cellos and trumpets.

Thanks to the grid, his fellow performers do not even need to be in the same concert hall. In this way, Vicinanza and the ‘Lost Sounds Orchestra' have been able to work live with musicians and dancers who are as far apart as Stockholm and Kuala Lumpur.

In effect he manipulates space and time by using the grid. He says his role is to be a bridge between the various worlds: “I’m a musician, network engineer . . . and I can program.”
