Issue 177: iSGTW 2 June 2010

Profile: EGI’s director, Steven Newhouse

A new, long-term organization tasked with coordinating the European Grid Infrastructure was just formed, called EGI.eu.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, it will support Europe’s National Grid Initiatives as they operate the infrastructure which was built by the previous projects known as DataGrid, EGEE-I, -II and -III.

EGI’s director, Steven Newhouse, was just appointed last month, and he will leave his post at CERN as EGEE’s  technical director to head the new organization (and its closely affiliated EGI-InSPIRE project).

On one of his last days at CERN, former iSGTW editor Danielle Venton asked him a few questions.

Here, Newhouse briefly outlines the role of EGI, the nature of the grid and e-infrastructures, how he first became interested in the field of computing  — and what it’s like to move to Amsterdam.

As a special bonus, we’ve included a link to a brand-new GridBriefing about EGI, courtesy of GridTalk.
