Q&A: Peer-reviewed physics, at the speed of light


In the time since the LHC started up, four papers on high-energy physics have already been published.

Fifteen were in preparation as of mid-month, all based on the collisions that just happened.

One week after the first collisions, the first papers were published electronically.

And everything was all peer-reviewed.

How was this done so quickly, especially when peer-reviewed papers in print journals take weeks, months, or even years to go through the process? What is driving this emphasis, and what does it mean for high-energy physics?

To find out, iSGTW spoke with Sergio Bertolucci, the head of research and computing at CERN. Here, in question-and-answer format, he gives his thumbnail impressions.
