Announcement - VPH 2010: Registration and call for abstracts

The Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence (VPH NoE) will hold the first of a series of VPH Conferences (VPH2010) on 30 September to 1 October 2010.

The first meeting will be held in Brussels, Belgium, and is supported by the European Commission ICT for Health / DG Information Society and Media. The Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence is an umbrella project representing the Virtual Physiological Human Initiative set up by the European Commission with a budget of ~ 350 million Euros for the Framework 7 Program. The VPH NoE is also responsible for producing a 'VPH Vision and Strategy Document' to inform the next calls for the VPH field for FP7, FP8 and for European large infrastructural actions.

This first meeting will be dedicated to the VPH Initiative, bringing together key representatives from VPH groups, industry and clinics. The first meeting is designed to be relatively small, up to a maximum of 200 participants. Parallel sessions will be held on both days with proposed topics in four main themes: Organ Systems, Modeling Scales, Research Methodology, Application Domains and Data Access and Information Assurance. The conference is expected to increase in size and scope of the VPH conference in subsequent years.

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, unless applications exceed the meeting’s capacity, in which case active participation (submitted abstract) will be considered. Please click here for online registration.

Submissions for posters or for oral presentations are welcome. Both kinds of submissions will be subject to the same reviewing process. Contributors are asked to submit abstracts rather than full papers. Submitted abstracts will be selected for inclusion in VPH 2010 by the VPH 2010 Programme Committee for:

  • Inclusion as an oral presentation and Invitation to submit a full paper for possible inclusion in the Interface Focus Issue
  • Inclusion as an oral presentation and/or
  • Inclusion as a poster

Talks and posters will appear in electronic format on the conference web pages via the VPH NoE website.

After the meeting, we will publish the best VPH2010 papers in Interface Focus in 2010. Interface Focus is a new themed journal of the Royal Society Interface Journal. It currently produces six Focus issues per annum, as a "supplement" to Interface. However, effective at the beginning of 2011, Interface Focus will become a free standing Royal Society journal and the VPH2010 issue will be one of its first publications.

The submission should be no more than two A4 pages of text (1800 words) or up to three pages if it includes diagrams, tables and references, with the extra space devoted to these and any captions. Font size should be no smaller than 10 pt Times New Roman with 2.5cm margins. All pages should be numbered and diagrams and tables should be positioned in their proper place in relation to the text, ensuring that the total contribution does not exceed 3 pages. Authors invited to prepare full manuscripts for submission to Interface Focus will also need to adhere to a further schedule for submission and review; final copy will be required by 15th February 2011.

Contributions are invited in, but not limited to, the following broad areas and topics:

  • Organ Systems
  • Modelling Scales
  • Research Methodology
  • Application Domains
  • Data Access & Information Assurance

We anticipate the possibility of a space for exhibits and demonstrators. If you would be interested in representing your project, organization or company at this conference at a booth then please contact the conference organizers.

Please refer to the conference website for further details and instructions. If you have any questions regarding abstract submission or registration please contact the VPH2010 Conference Team at
