This year, entrants in the eResearch Australasia Visualization Challenge will submit visualizations of financial markets in order to make a bid for the A$5000 prize for the winning entry.

Entries, which are due 6 October, will include a static image or video that showcases each entrant’s visualization of a financial market data set provided by the contest organizers. These must be accompanied by an explanation of the visualization design and the analysis or modeling techniques used, along with an explanation of major insights the entrant gained by participating in the Challenge, and a discussion of potential educational applications of the visualization.

The winning entry, which will be chosen by an international interdisciplinary panel of judges, will be chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Truthfulness of the data representation
  • How well the visualization serves the needs of its ‘clients’
  • Quality of data preparation and analysis
  • Layout and design of the visualization
  • Potential re-usability of both the visualization and underlying software used to generate the visualization
  • Extent of interactivity, reconfiguration and adaptability of the results
  • The significance of insights gained
  • Educational value
  • Visual appeal
  • Description of work of work and documentation outlining underlying technologies that were employed

The winner or a representative of the winner must be present at the eResearch Australasia 2009 conference 9-13 November in Sydney, Australia.
