Announcement - Digital geography in a Web 2.0 world

Digital Geography in a Web 2.0 World
Monday, 15 September 2008, 10am - 5pm
Urbis Museum, Manchester, UK

Modern Web technologies and approaches have resulted in great changes for geography and geographers.  New research has been made possible by these new technologies.

Interest in geography is great—200 million people have downloaded Google Earth—and things like Google Maps and route planners are now taken for granted.

How are academics using these new technologies? How are these geographic tools being used by social scientists in general?

At this free event we will examine these questions.  We expect it to be of particular interest to geographers, social scientists, academics, policy makers and students.

Attendees will learn about tools the National Centre for eSocial Science (NCeSS) is developing and how the social science community is embracing them.   We'll show urban simulations based on land use transport modeling, but run entirely through visual interfaces.  We'll talk about iconic digital models based on Geographic Information System and Computer Aided Design, and we'll talk about how patterns such as residential land use at the macro level can occur through the actions of individuals at the micro scale; for this we turn to agent-based modelling. A series of examples from building evacuation to traffic jams will be given before turning to how we communicate such models to the masses through the use of Web 2.0 technologies, especially that of Second Life.

This event is free to attend, but does require registration.
