Announcement - Registration free: “Why you need grid and how to do it,” May, UK

Grid computing provides the power required to run complex applications, like this financial simulation, an application of Avanade Italy. Avanade, who are studying the use of EGEE’s gLite middleware, will present a case study on Cloud Computing in European Banking at the workshop.

Registration is encouraged for the “Why you need grid and how to do it” Distributed Computing Workshop, to be held 21 May 2008.

The workshop is being organized by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Kite Club, and co-hosted with the Business Forum of the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE project.

The workshop will bring together different user communities and projects to learn about support and funding that STFC offers for collaborative partnerships between businesses and scientists. It is aimed at connecting scientists funded by STFC and EGEE with companies and players from other research councils for a hands-on discussion about opportunities for knowledge transfer and collaborative development.

“EGEE has embarked on a strategic process to target businesses and especially SMEs and start-ups as the main beneficiaries of grid adoption. Events like the workshop in London and mechanisms like our Industry Committee’s Focus Group on SMEs and start-ups offer a prime opportunity to highlight prototyping prospects via the GILDA test bed, training, expertise and consultancy,” says Bob Jones, EGEE project director. “This event is also important for extending relationships with technology transfer offices such as STFC in the UK,” he adds.

The workshop will offer a plenary session and two parallel sessions on Grid in Finance and Energy and Grid in Life Sciences and Healthcare. Participants will come away with new knowledge on:

  • Support schemes the UK Government offers to innovative companies interested in distributed computing technologies through Grid Computing Now! Knowledge Transfer Network and STFC Knowledge Exchange Service.
  • Challenges in the public sector that could be solved using distributed computing with a presentation from the Department for Transport.
  • Large e-Science infrastructures, their capabilities and offerings for companies and scientists, with presentations from EGEE, GridPP and Daresbury Lab.
  • How entrepreneurs and small companies could benefit from the grid and how they can do it, with presentations from EGEE Business Associate (EBA), Excelian, along with Constellation Technologies and Econophysica.
  • How large companies achieve their business objectives using distributed computing, with talks from Credit Suisse, Total UK and Philips Research. EBA, Avanade, is presenting a case study on Cloud Computing adoption in EU banking.
“The Workshop will showcase how EGEE is actively promoting partnerships with companies through the Business Associate program to provide services offered to user communities on the EGEE infrastructure and to leverage technology transfer to other installations,” Bob Jones remarks.

International partnerships on grid also feature in the workshop. EU-IndiaGrid, one of EGEE’s collaborating projects, is giving a talk that showcases innovative approaches to Drug Design on the Grid enabled by a new tool called BEmuse.
