Link of the week - MathCell

The Mathcell project aims to create a multipurpose environment for obtaining new fundamental knowledge of the living cell biology.

The living cell is one of the world’s most complex dynamic systems. Now a team from Russia is working to create a MathCell: a grid-managed multi-purpose environment for further research in biology and bioinformatics.

The MathCell project integrates existing individual knowledge—including mathematical models, bioinformatics resources and computational facilities—into a system that will simulate cell processes at many different levels: from microscopic to macroscopic scales, and from picoseconds to the lifetime of a cell.

Based at the Institute of Mathematical Problems in Biology at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Pushchino, the team is using the Russian Data Intensive Grid (RDIG) and the EGEE cyberinfrastructures to power the project.

The MathCell environment will be useful for various biomedical applications.

The MathCell project is partially supported by EGEE and the Russian Foundation of Basic Research.
