Announcement - Applications open: South African Grid School 2008, July, South Africa


The University of the Witwatersand was founded in 1896 and is home to the oldest and largest university press in Africa.

Registration for the South African Grid School, which will take place from 23-25 July 2008 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, is now open.

Participants will learn to use grids of thousands of processors and will be able to continue to use these resources for their research after the workshop.

The workshop will focus on use of the Open Science Grid and will cover:
  • An overview of distributed computing concepts and tools
  • Concepts, tools and techniques of grid computing
  • Discovering and using grid resources
  • Grid scheduling and distributed data management
  • Web service and grid service concepts
  • Distributed data mining
  • Techniques for workflow and collaboration
Undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, educators and professionals in engineering, computer science, or any scientific, data- or computing-intensive discipline are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should have at least intermediate programming skills (one to two semesters experience in C/C++, Java, Perl, and/or Python) and hands-on experience with UNIX / Linux in a networked environment.

Funding is available for students wishing to attend. Those wishing to receive support should submit a brief motivation, CV and letter of support from their supervisor.
