You’re never too young to learn!

Late in 2007, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory introduced 36 primary school students to the future of computer science as part of their Grids 4 Kids day.

Modelled on an event held at CERN earlier in the year, Grids 4 Kids saw students and teachers from Stephen Freeman School venture to RAL to learn all about grid technology.

The event covered the Large Hadron Collider, LHC@home, grid computing and more, using volunteer presentations, tours and hands-on games from TryScience.org

A session on Internet security also helped explain the need for secure passwords and protected personal information in an online environment.

The final session was a tour of RAL’s computing facilities, including the GridPP Tier-1 center, the tape robot and the tape safe.

Organizer Philippa Strange was very happy with how the day went. “The children grasped the basic concepts of grid computing extremely well,” she said.

“They amazed us all with their enthusiasm, intrigue and intelligent questioning during such a very busy day. The event was a resounding success; thanks to children and staff for making it all so worthwhile.”

The day was sponsored by GridPP along with the National Grid Service, Enabling Grids for e-Science, the Science and Technology Facilities Council and ISSeG.

Hot to press: The Enabling Grids for E-sciencE project will hold another Grids for Kids day on 18 January 2008 at CERN, involving students aged 9 to 11 from the Institut International de Lancy in Geneva. The day will feature presentations on what grids are, a tour of the CERN computer centre and a feedback session complete with questionnaires and certificates.
