Announcement - CERN Public Open Day: 6 April 2008, Geneva, Switzerland

The European Nuclear Research Organization, better known as CERN, will be opening its doors to the public at its 2008 Public Open Day, to be held 6 April from 9am to 7pm.

As part of this event, the CERN IT department will be running guided tours of the CERN Computing Centre, the Tier-0 center for the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, as well as staffing a Grid Café expo exploring “Computing for the Large Hadron Collider.”

Last chance to go underground

CERN tours to see parts of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are booked out months in advance, and, when the LHC begins operation in 2008, these underground areas will become inaccessible for members of the public and the press.

This Open Day is thus a last chance to descend 100 meters underground to see what will become the world’s largest machine and most powerful particle accelerator.

33,000 physics enthusiasts

CERN’s most recent Open Day—held in 2004 to celebrate CERN’s 50th anniversary—attracted around 33,000 visitors. This was an incredible success and similar attendance is expected this time.

A second Open Day for CERN staff and families will be held 5 April from 9am to 2pm, as a response to the tremendous popularity of the 2004 Open Day and to thank CERN staff for their volunteer efforts in staffing the Open Days.
