The UK National Grid Service (NGS) recently increased its data storage capacity from 46 terabytes to 192 terabytes at its four core sites: the universities of Leeds, Manchester, Oxford and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. This upgrade is in addition to existing resources at the five NGS partner sites and three NGS affiliate sites.

These resources can be remotely assessed by UK academic researchers, who are currently using them for medical imaging simulations, earth science modeling, computational chemistry applications and more.

Welcome for new partners

The University of Southampton is the latest university to join the UK National Grid Service with affiliate status, with the Microsoft Institute for High Performance Computing at the University providing access to the Microsoft Compute Cluster Service through a Globus gateway, the first instance of a Windows cluster being incorporated into a production level Grid.

Imperial College London also joined the NGS as an affiliate member in August. The contribution of the Beowulf cluster from Imperial College London is the first of several resources that the institution hopes to contribute to the NGS.
