The North and South Poles continue to capture the human imagination: wonderlands of white at the far ends of the earth; plunged into months of winter darkness after months of summer light; and constantly on the move, adrift on endless sheets of shifting ice.

Except the ice is not as endless as we thought. And we don’t quite know why.

Geoffrey Fox is the leader of a new US $1.96 million grid-powered project designed to find these answers and more.

Called Polar Grid, it promises to revolutionize the way polar science is done.
