Acronym of the week - LOBSTER

LOBSTER is the successor of another Internet monitoring program with a crustaceous acronym—SCAMPI—standing for A Scaleable Monitoring Platform for the Internet. What delectable seafood will they think of next?

LOBSTER has captured data from more than 400,000 Internet attacks using 36 passive monitoring sensors deployed in nine different countries.

Somehow an acronym for Large-scale Monitoring of Broadband Internet Infrastructures, LOBSTER monitors Internet traffic across Europe with the aim of improving Internet security.

The full details of the thousands of attacks cannot be made public because of privacy issues; however, using LOBSTER software, a very small sample of attack data has been stripped of sensitive information and recently made available.

LOBSTER’s sensors are continuing to monitor Internet traffic, working together to monitor traffic across 2.3 million IP addresses at any one time, using four applications developed during the project.

The LOBSTER infrastructure is unique in Europe and one of only three similar infrastructures that exist in the world today. The project is comprised of nine partners including research organisations, commercial partners and National Research and Education Networks.
