 Grids Aid Battle Against Cancer

Spanish medical staff in the region of Valencia have a new weapon in the arsenal against cancer. In January, a team of medical and computing researchers launched CVIMO, a grid-enabled infrastructure that shares oncological studies, digital images and reports among five hospitals in the Valencia region.

Oncologists share information through CVIMO, which works with technologies already in use at hospitals.

 Open Science Grid Takes Stock and Sets New Goals
The San Diego Supercomputing Center on the sunny campus of UC San Diego hosted the Open Science Grid consortium All Hands Meeting March 5–7. Beyond the welcome respite from late winter weather for many out-of-towners, it was OSG at work, sleeves rolled up.

 Gridifying Geant4
Twice a year a new version of Geant4, a software toolkit used by many scientists, is released to the research community. Before a release, the new version of Geant4 must be carefully tested. Evaluators use the WLCG to dramatically accelerate the testing process.

Acronym of the Week

BNL GIMPS
The Great Internet Merseene Prime Search is a volunteer computing project that links tens of thousands of computers worldwide in search of prime numbers.

Volunteers contribute to the search by downloading GIMPS software to their personal computer. The program runs at low priority, using spare CPU cycles to process work assigned by PrimeNet, a central server on the Internet, and report results.

 International Summer School for Grid Computing 2007 
Registration is now open for the International Summer School for Grid Computing, to be held this year in Stockholm, Sweden, July 8–20.

The school targets young researchers who are starting to use grids in their research. To learn more and register click here. The deadline for applications is May 1.

 UK e-Science All Hands Meeting: Call for Participation 
The sixth UK e-Science All Hands Meeting will be held September 10–13 at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham.

The AHM program committee is currently accepting submissions of papers, mini-workshop presentations, posters and birds-of-a-feather sessions. The deadline for submission is April 16. To learn more visit the meeting Web site.
